#42 There's No 'I' in Team!
If you find yourself as part of a group of survivors during the undead plague, you need to start thinking as a group - sensibly rationing food and supplies, sharing tasks and responsibilities appropriately etc. Remember: if you function efficiently as a group, you are more likely to survive this nightmare, so be a team player.

#41 Follow Your Nose
The shuffling undead can be recognised by, among other things, a ghastly odour - they are effectively walking, rotting corpses and will smell likewise. So, when in doubt as to whether there are any zombies in your presence, let your nose be your guide!

#40 Keep Your Eyes Open
On your travels, be aware of any warning signs in your surroundings - for example, other survivors who have passed through the area before you may well have left messages/warning signs behind (areas to avoid, locations of supplies and safe zones etc.). In any case, keep your eyes peeled to avoid any grave mistakes.

#39 Think of the Children!
If you have young children in your company during such dark times, it is important that you teach them and warn them of the seriousness of the situation. For example, they must learn to keep quiet in dangerous areas, never to wander off alone etc. However, you must try to guide them and raise their awareness without overdoing it and traumatising them - at the same time try to keep children sheltered from this horror as much as possible, for its unsettling enough to accept the notion of the dead rising as an adult. In short, protect children to the best of your ability and, in their presence, choose your words wisely.

#38 Know Your First Aid!
During such a disaster, all manner of casualties and injuries may be encountered - i.e. not all will necessarily be zombie-inflicted. Therefore, if not already, be comfortable using basic medical equipment and procedures - e.g. dressing wounds with appropriate bandages and antiseptics, the resuscitation sequence, dealing with shock and blood-loss etc. There are various, accessible ways in which you can learn these methods (as well as recognise warning signs) such as first aid courses, literature and related websites so get informed - this knowledge can be lifesaving and you never know when you might need it.

#37 Avoid unnecessary combat
Although it is tempting to eliminate every flesh-eating zombie on sight, it is also a very hazardous decision. Remember: a single bite can seal your fate, so only eliminate the undead when required – e.g. to save another individual or when the enemy is between you and shelter etc. Avoid killing the walking dead just for the sake of it as this can prove to be a waste of time, ammunition and possibly life itself.

#36 Pimp Your Ride
It is advisable to have transport readily available during such grim circumstances. It is also important that you fortify your vehicle and make it as zombie-proof as possible - make sure windows and other vulnerable areas are well-covered/protected etc. Ideally, you want a vehicle that is tough and resilient, being able to overcome barricades as well as undead crowds. If you haven’t already, try to acquire a car that can tackle multiple terrains to avoid getting stranded. Keep emergence fuel and spare tyres.

#35 Whatever the Weather
The weather may seem to play a minor role, considering that the dead have risen and now seek us for sustenance, but under certain circumstances, it can have a critical impact on your survival. As it can be such an unpredictable factor, it is important to be as prepared as possible - particularly if on the move or without shelter. Unlike us, the undead are barely affected by significant changes in temperature, humidity or light - e.g. they no longer require water, rest or even clear vision. On the other hand, harsh weather conditions can greatly affect and hinder non-infected individuals - severe rain or snowfall can block pathways, high temperatures can encourage fatigue and dehydration etc. As such, we must try to remain one step ahead - Dress in layers, carry waterproof clothing, have on durable footwear, carry bottled water and protection for your eyes and hands (gloves/sunglasses etc - depending on your location). Be ready for anything, rain or shine.

#34 Brighten Up
Under such chaotic circumstances, the likelihood of blackouts and other power failures would increase significantly. With this in mind, it would be wise to stock up on as many light sources as you can - candles, flares, matches, torches (and batteries) etc. Try to keep an operational light source at hand whenever possible because, after all, you wouldn’t want to be caught in the middle of total darkness with the undead scratching at the door...
Be prepared.

#33 Think Before You Shoot
Zombies are us essentially. As such, they resemble us physically and, barring any obvious signs (e.g. signs of advanced decay/decomposition, bite marks etc.), it can be difficult to tell the infected and non-infected apart at times - particularly across considerable distances, in darkness and harsh weather conditions etc. Also, those individuals who may have only recently died and returned (i.e. with no clear, identifiable injuries or other tell-tale symptoms) may not be so easy to recognise right away. Therefore, when facing a potential undead enemy, you must choose your actions wisely to avoid a grave mistake - be absolutely sure that what you are fighting is in fact a zombie. By the same token, be cautious when approaching someone who is acting strangely despite appearing to be a member of the living. Looks can be deceiving.

As well as rescuing survivors and defeating murderous psychopaths, you get the chance to be extra inventive in this game - many ordinary household items, tools and traditional weapons can be combined to create ultimate weapons with devastating capabilities - making zombie-slaying all the more thrilling.

#32 Know the Area
With flesh-eating zombies on the prowl, it’s very important that you know your current location well - i.e. be aware of potential danger zones, know the location of police stations/hospitals/secret shortcuts etc. If you are in unfamiliar territory when the undead strike, grab a map and get familiar as this knowledge may one day be lifesaving.

#31 Bar your doors and lock your windows
Should you choose to remain in a shelter for the duration of the undead plague, it is of vital importance that you secure the area as tightly as possible. Ensure that no point of entry is left vulnerable - remember: fending off one or two zombies may seem quite simple, but they can have considerable strength in numbers. However, it is also imperative that you have an accessible escape route should help arrive or in case things take a downward turn and the walking dead manage to overcome the barricades. Don’t cut corners - fortify your refuge properly if you want to survive this nightmare.

#30 Cross-species infection is a possibility
It is not yet known as to whether this mysterious, zombifying virus would able to infect species other than our own. Clearly, if this viral strain is able to do so, the threat level would be dramatically enhanced - if the virus is able to combine with, for example, a canine in a similar manner (i.e. causing death and reanimation) to that of a human host, a faster, and more aggressive hunter would be created. Dealing with this type of enemy can be far more hazardous than trying to escape the clutches of its human counterpart. Be cautious and keep this factor in mind.

#29 Take the lead when no one else will
A situation such as this can cause all manner of chaos and mayhem, making cooperation exceedingly difficult. A zombie outbreak could bring out the worst in some but the best in others. Sometimes, all a jittery, disorganized band of survivors needs is a competent leader to take control of the situation, though at the same time you should be wary of too many individuals trying to take charge - you must try to reach a fair compromise. Should you take on the role of leader, you must try to make use of the appropriate skills of each member and ultimately do what is best for the group. Remember, if we fail to work together, the undead have already won.

#28 Don’t play with fire
It would be wise to avoid using fire as a means of slaying any approaching undead foes as this drastic step may enhance the danger of your situation - a blazing zombie will not simply stop in its tracks nor will it run away in panic or pain, it will continue in its pursuit of human flesh until the brain is destroyed. You wouldn’t want to be in close proximity of a walking corpse ablaze so choose your weapon wisely.

#27 This isn’t a videogame, this is the real thing!
Keep in mind that, should the dead rise, it will not be like being in the middle of a shoot ‘em up zombie game - you don’t have a limitless number of lives, there aren’t bundles of health and ammunition round the corner nor is there necessarily a safe room just up ahead. Be cautious and handle this situation with the care and serious thought it warrants - remember: if you screw up, you don’t get another go.

#25 Zombies aren’t the only enemy
The notion of the dead rising strongly correlates with explosive levels of bacterial growth and contamination. Each walking, rotting corpse could be teaming with all manner of bacterial colonies and diseases. These pathogens could easily be spread via touch, saliva or open wounds to, for example, fresh foods (i.e. perishables) and lakes/rivers and later ingested by non-infected individuals. In some cases, exposure to the smallest amount (e.g. a single cell) can be sufficient for disease contraction. That said, it would be prudent to stick with canned goods and bottled water.

#24 Teamwork is a vital weapon
When zombies congregate, their strength and abilities can improve dramatically and we, non-infected individuals, are no different. We each have our own strengths and weaknesses and should we decide to cooperate by combining our skills and providing support, the undead won’t stand a chance.

#23 Make every day count
Whether you decide to hold-up in a fortress or keep on the move when the undead strike, it is important that you plan your time efficiently and effectively. Try to be productive, even if they only seem like simple, trivial activities e.g. exercise each day, practice using unfamiliar weapons/tools etc. If nothing else, these daily routines will help to preserve your sanity and may temporarily take your mind off living-dead related matters.

#22 Fear is contagious

Remember that fear and panic are easily spread – if those around you notice you losing your cool or cracking under the pressure, they are likely to do the same and you cannot afford for this to happen in the middle of a zombie apocalypse. When order and balance are lost, the undead will rush in so it is therefore imperative that you remain as calm and collected as possible.

#21 Necessity is the mother of invention
When the dead walk the earth, you don’t necessarily have to be packing heat, nor is it crucial to be equipped with the latest gadgets and gizmos in order to survive. Commonplace, household objects can be just as effective and useful - whether they are used in zombie combat or for basic survival. When used in the right way, almost any item can be adapted for use in an undead environment (e.g. combining tools etc.) - be inventive.

#20 Use your head to beat the undead
Battling zombies is not a hopeless affair - they have strengths and weaknesses as we do. Intelligence is a vital tool we have to our advantage as the undead lack any definite brainpower. They are merely eating automatons that respond to simple stimuli - smell, movement etc. They can be fooled, distracted and outwitted. Remember: Even when you have nothing else, you do have your wits and that can be life-saving in such a situation.

#19 You can't take it with you
In situations such as natural disasters, law and order can go astray, paving the way for rioting and looting and a zombie outbreak scenario is no exception. Under such perilous circumstances, obsession with material goods (be them your own or otherwise) can lead to your own undoing. Although tempting, it is not worth risking your life for the sake of expensive but essentially useless items. Likewise, if you decide to keep on the move, it would be wise not to burden yourself with such items - all the television sets and Fabergé eggs in the world are of no use to you if you’re (un)dead. Think practical and only take what you need.

#18 Have an escape plan - Know your exits
Should you decide to lay low when the undead strike you must ensure that your shelter is well fortified. It is also important to remember that no matter how secure your refuge may seem, enough zombies may be able to overcome certain barriers - in high numbers, their combined strength can be immense. Therefore to avoid a sticky end, it is wise to have an escape strategy in place e.g. a back entrance, readily available transport etc. You would not want to arrive at a dead end if your refuge is suddenly overcome by the infected so don’t let it happen.

#17 Don’t split up!
If there’s one thing we’ve learned from countless horror movies in the past, it’s not to split up in a perilous situation and this case is no exception. Although it can be useful and time-saving under certain circumstances e.g. scavenging for supplies etc, it can also leave you more vulnerable to attacks as you are at more risk of being caught off guard alone. You need someone watching your back whenever possible so, if you are among a group of fellow survivors, avoid venturing anywhere without at least one other member of the group.

#15 Dress Appropriately
This might seem obvious or of little importance yet it may one day prove to be life-saving. When in undead territory, think practically - don’t make it easy for them. Tie long hair back or better yet cut it short. Avoid loose, baggy clothing that can be grabbed easily, whilst at the same time try to cover up as much as you can - although not crucial, it may help to prevent bites and scratches from breaking the skin (i.e. prevent infection). It may be worth wearing clothing with lots of pockets and compartments to store weapons etc. and any useful items you may come across along the way. Be sure to wear comfortable, durable shoes that allow for a quick escape.

#14 Choose your route wisely – When on the move, keep in mind that zombies may occupy unexpected areas (i.e. locations where non-infected individuals fear to tread or are normally unable to access). For example, since oxygen intake is no longer an essential requirement for the undead, they may even be found lurking in the watery depths of ponds and lakes etc – even in perilous environments they may still be functional (as long as the brain is still intact). It is important to note that certain factors that would normally be barriers to us may not be so for the infected – so always keep your wits about you, regardless of your location.

#13 Underestimation is a dangerous mistake to make – It can be easy to misjudge the capabilities of the undead due to their defining characteristics – zombies are generally slow, lumbering creatures with a definite absence of brain-power. Therefore, dealing with a solitary zombie does not seem so daunting. However, do not forget that the real threat lies within the zombie masses – they do not prey on each other and, when in crowds, they essentially function as a single unit with one objective – the consumption of human flesh. Together, their capabilities can be overwhelming and have devastating effects – bear this in mind and don’t be outnumbered.

Zombie-Survival Tip of the Week !

Every Friday we will provide you with a handy survival tip, should the unthinkable happen....

#12– Treat recently bitten individuals with extreme caution – if a member of your party is unfortunate enough to receive a bite wound from an undead foe, you must monitor their condition thoroughly over subsequent days. It would be advisable to put them out of their misery sooner rather than later, although like many other tasks, this is easier said than done. Their actions and personality may alter dramatically as the infection takes hold and any erratic or reckless behaviour on their part may put others at risk so it may be worth keeping them in quarantine to avoid this. It has been suggested that cutting off the affected limb immediately after receiving the bite may spare your companion from a zombified fate, but the chances of this being the case are very slim. It is also important to be wary of injured individuals that you may happen upon during your travels, for they may conceal the nature of their wounds.

So, to avoid being caught off-guard, it is advisable to be armed at all times.

#8 – Be wary of the Living - contact with uninfected individuals can, on occasion, prove to be as dangerous as contact with zombies themselves. Other survivors may have ulterior motives or hidden agendas and may use your company to their own advantage (e.g. use you as a decoy in order to make their escape etc.). The actions of others, particularly strangers, can be unpredictable - at least when confronting a zombie you know where you stand: kill or be killed. Bear this in mind if you decide to hook-up with fellow survivors.

#6 – Take the road less travelled – the flesh-eating undead would be expected to gather in densely populated areas, in which they are more likely to find sustenance. So if you plan to keep on the move when the living dead strike, keep to rural/uninhabited locations where zombie encounters would be less frequent - however, as always, it is crucial to remain vigilant.

If however, you are faced with no other alternative, remember – major trauma to the head is the most effective method of zombie eradication. Injuries elsewhere may debilitate your decomposing adversary, but they will keep coming back for more, unless the brain is destroyed.

#3 – Acting like a zombie will NOT make you immune to attacks! – It has been suggested that behaving like the undead in their company may help you to evade your rotting opponents; this however is not the case. Zombies have the ability to detect the presence of non-infected flesh at a basic, primary level. Although they may be brain-dead, attempting to mimic their mannerisms (shuffling/moaning etc.) will certainly not fool them – please do not attempt this one folks.

'Zombies' have free speech rights too, US court rules...

In the news this week...

WASHINGTON (AFP) – They're said to utter little more than an occasional groan, but zombies -- the blood-drenched monsters of Hollywood "B" movies -- still have a right to free speech, a US court ruled this week.

An appeals court in the northern US city of Minneapolis, Minnesota on Wednesday allowed a group of zombies -- or rather, several protesters costumed as such -- to press ahead with their lawsuit against police who arrested them for disorderly conduct.

The appeals court overturned a lower court in finding that the group of seven "zombies" had been wrongfully detained during a 2006 shopping mall protest against consumerism.
